With the publication in 1951 of his book “Catcher in the Rye” Jerome David Salinger became one of the fundamental American writers of the 20th Century. For reasons that still remain shrouded in mystery, he disappeared in 1965, withdrawing from the world and refusing any contact. Salinger is said to be alive today and living somewhere in New Hampshire. In 2007, the French writer, Frédéric Beigbeder, decides to leave for the USA seeking out Jerome David Salinger, now 89 years old. As he searches for Salinger, followed closely by the camera of Jean-Marie Périer, a film unfolds of a French writer seeking out his personal and cultural sources, while creating a vivid portrait of American contemporary culture. Shot on location in the Cuban provinces Pinar de Rio and Havana, where socialistic workers need three to four years to produce a Havana, and in London, Madrid, and Berlin, where Havana afficionados whiff these expensive toys in forty-five minutes, this entertaining documentary takes a look at the history and tradition of the finest cigar in the world. Some of the more famous smokers of the Havana were Winston Churchill, Fidel Castro, Groucho Marx, and John F. Kennedy.

In this lecture on J. D. Salinger’s Franny and Zooey, Professor Hungerford presents her argument about religion in the novel as an example to students of how to construct a sound literary critical paper using evidence from the text. Moving between large claims and close readings, Hungerford shows how Salinger prevents his investment in mysticism from becoming mystification by grounding his sense of the divine in the specificity of persons, the importance of family language and love. In this way writing, like the theme of acting that appears again and again in the novel, models a spiritual performance that brings together artist and audience in the partnership of human communication.
